Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier
Three best friends. One devastating night that changes their lives. Truths that remains secrets, which unravel over time and when they are revealed, it's time to do or die.
The plot revolves around Georgina 'Geo' Shaw; Angela Wong her best friend who disappeared; Kaiser, who completes the trio and Calvin, who Geo fell in love with. When Angela disappears, the town is shocked and devastated. They are even more devastated when 14 years later, Geo's involvement is revealed in the death of her best friend and that Calvin is her killer. She faces time in prison for what she did, but even then, she doesn't reveal the entire truth.
This is the first book by, @jenniferhillierbooks that I read. I must admit, I finished it in two days because I really wanted to know what the truth was and WHY Geo did what she did. The characters she has written and far from perfect and I think that was the aim of this book, partly. It shows that no matter how well our upbringing is or how we exist as well adjusted members of society; everybody has a dark side and it shows up in ugly ways.
The lives of these characters is again in the limelight as there are multiple killings which are eerily similar to what happened to Angela. The police team, lead by Kaiser are hunting for Calvin but he eludes them.
Geo is complicated. She has hidden so many truths that it takes everything she has to keep up the charade. I did like the characters of women she befriends in prison, because it made them seem so human. I absolutely hated Calvin and with good reason. I was irritated with Kaiser because in multiple instances, his emotions overwhelmed his duty as a police officer.
The book did leave me with many questions, which I can't reveal as they'd be spoilers but for the most part, I enjoyed reading it. The reveal at the end is shocking but won't surprise much. There are trigger warnings for this book; SA, being prominent. Please read with caution.
The story is a messed up one but it will keep you intrigued. I give it 3.5/5
