Ask for Andrea by Noelle W. Ihli

Brecia, Meghan, and Skye were murdered by James Carson, a charming man who lured them online. After their deaths, their spirits seek revenge and try to prevent James from killing again. Will they be able to stop him in time from committing more murders and hurting innocent lives? This was a different kind of POV and that's what intrigued me to read the novel. Brecia, Meghan and Skye were murdered by James to satisfy his blood-lust. He lures women online, stalks them, confronts them, sometimes loses interest and keeps multiple women on hook to be able to carry out his nefarious motives. Brecia is the most strong willed of the three; Meghan, the one caught in limbo and Skye, the youngest of all, with a common aim to stop James. Being spirits there is only so much they can do, but they try their best. Their aim is to protect James' wife and children, come what may and finally rest in peace. I liked this book. It's the only one I have read from author  @noelleihliauthor  an...

The Teacher by Freida McFadden

Image
Eve and Nate are a married couple, who also teach at Caseham High. Eve is a Math teacher, very good at her job, very formal with her students and therefore not a favourite of the students. Nate, on the other hand is a good looking man, very empathetic and a student favourite. Caseham High is still reeling from a scandal involving a teacher and student name Addie. Addie lies, tries to hurt people and has a hidden past. But now she has a new secret. How far will she go to keep it and what becomes of the people who cross her? This book gave me the ick, mainly because it deals with the topic of student teacher relationship and it creeps me out. Eve and Nate have such different personalities that even as a reader, you are astounded that they are still married. Addie is vulnerable, and has heaps of baggage. She is bullied and harassed and finds comfort in poetry. The entire plot revolves around how Eve and Addie's paths cross and the consequences of actions, both past and present, that...

The Coworker by Freida McFadden

Image
The story centers on the mysterious disappearance of Dawn Schiff, an eccentric and introverted office worker, and the subsequent investigation led by her more conventional colleague, Natalie Farrell. Dawn's odd behavior and enigmatic past make her disappearance all the more intriguing, while Natalie's determination to uncover the truth reveals her own agendas. The novel reads from the POV of Dawn and Natalie. Dawn's description of her life, her interactions especially with her boss and Natalie and her emails to her best friend Mia, leads the reader to sympathise with Dawn, especially as you realize that she is autistic or on the spectrum but it isn't explictity mentioned. Her observations lead the author to form opinions about Natalie and you find yourself drawn to defend Dawn. Natalie is concerned for her colleague and for the most part is trying to escape the web she has landed into by trying to locate Dawn. When a body is found, all hell breaks loose. Who is to bla...

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden

Millie is looking for a job after being sacked from her previous one and having spent 10 years in jail. A fact she does not want her new potential employer to know. Nina Winchester, married to the wealthy Andrew Winchester, is looking for a nanny/house keeper and seems to love Millie immediately. A week goes by post their interview and Millie gets the job. She is happy on two accounts - one, she doesn't have to live in her car any more and two, she can earn some money to sustain herself. With all of them having secrets and agendas, one thing remains clear - this is not a happy ending for some. This book has been recommended on so many forums that I had to give in and read. It started off well enough and didn't make me want to DNF it. What it did make me feel, was the intense urge to slap every single person in this book. Even the kid. I am an incredibly non violent person, so this was a very strange. Nonetheless, I kept reading and eventually understood that my urge was very ...

The Body in the Library by Agatha Christie - A Miss Marple Mystery

Image
Mr and Mrs Bantry wake up to find the body of a young woman in their library, with no idea of who she is or how she came to be there. Mrs.Bantry immediately calls up her friend, Miss Marple, to help investigate and solve the crime before the village of St. Mary Mead gossips and ruins the Bantrys social standing. There are suspects galore and they all seem to have a connection with The Majestic hotel and the Jefferson family. While the investigation continues, another body is found and now Miss Marple knows just the direction her investigation needs to follow! This is the first Miss Marple book I have read. I was in a slump for a bit and really didn't think of the order. Just picked up the book from my shelf and started reading. I have to say I am very biased to the incredible Monsieur Poirot and was pretty grumpy when I started reading this book. I was proven wrong and how! This is such a warm & cosy read and Miss Marple is such a wonderful lady. She's abreast of the villag...

The Roses of May by Dot Hutchison - Book 2 of the Collector's series

Priya Sravasti lost her sister Chavi to a mad man who kills young girls and surrounds them with flowers. But that's not all. He now wants Priya to be his and follows her across continents reminding her of his presence by sending her the exact flowers surrounding the 16 girls he killed. The Quantico three - Victor Hanoverian, Brandon Eddison and Mercedes Ramirez, race to find him, but will they in time? The book reads from the POV of Priya and is focused on Eddison, like the first book was focused on Hanoverian. Inara and Bliss, the butterflies, the Gardener and his son make appearances in this book too. Priya is fierce, but her mother Deshani is a furnace. These women are incredibly sharp and smart and Eddison is their family. The story is familiar. It doesn't read well though. I found the language and the phrasing a bit tedious to get through. It was hard to keep reading because it got a bit boring but I wanted to know who the killer was so I kept reading. The author present...

Final Girls by Riley Sager

Image
Quincy, Samantha and Lisa are victims of different massacres but have one thing in common - they are final girls. They are the only ones who survived the ordeal. Quincy doesn't remember much of the horrifying night except a few scenes. All three women find ways to deal with the trauma, until one day news of Lisa's death reaches Quincy. Her past and present confuse her. She keeps repeating 'I'm fine' to everyone around her - her lawyer boyfriend, her case office Coop, her mother and a new friend, Samantha. Quincy's memories refuse to surface and she doesn't try to recall them either. When Samantha enters Quincy's life on the pretext of staying in touch after Lisa's death, everyone is suspicious, except Quincy herself. Sam's presence disrupts Quincy's life in ways she never imagined and she is forced to finally recall her trauma. What she remembers though, is shocking and brutal; because nothing and nobody is as they seem. The story reads slowl...

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

Image
Oh how I love Agatha Christie! She remains one of my favourite author of all time. This novel right here, I have read it at least eight times, at last count, and I continue to read it despite knowing the case inside out. The village of King’s Abbot is stunned when widow Ferrars dies from an overdose of Veronal. Not twenty-four hours later, Roger Ackroyd—the man she had planned to marry—is murdered. It is a confusing case that taxes Hercule Poirot’s 'little grey cells' before he reaches one of the most startling conclusions of his career. Hercule Poirot is my favourite fictional Detective. I have read heaps of Crime thrillers with memorable detectives, but Monsieur Poirot is unmatched. The way his little grey cells work, it puts most of us to shame because we barely use even 10% of what's given to us. This novel reads extremely well. There are clues scattered in the details, but only one of Poirot's calibre can see them and make sense of them. It's a clas...

The only one left by Riley Sager

Image
This is the first book of Riley Sager's that I read. I remember distinctly that it was all the rage and most forums I follow, had an alternate post about this novel. The plot revolves around the Hope family, primarily, Lenora Hope, who allegedly killed her parents and sister. She continues to live in her childhood home, named Hope's End, though her years have now rendered her almost invalid. Now, 54 years later, Kit McDeere, a health care aide arrives at Hope's End to care for Lenora. She battles her own demons, but greater ones lurk at Hope's End. Will sanity prevail as the people and the house reveal their secrets and betrayals. Dizzy. That's how I felt when I finished reading this novel. The writing ebbs and flows, in the sense that around the 40% mark, I was a bit bored. There are surprises along the way and you know pretty much in advance that there are big reveals coming. Boy, do they take their time. The final 25% of the book will hit you like a f...
