Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan

Image
Before I read this book, I knew about Norse mythology only through the Thor movies and the Vikings series. Once again it took one week to finish these books and fall in love with it and obviously re-read it multiple times since. The most prominent aspect of this series is the inclusivity of LGBTQIA+ characters, the religious blend of Islam and Norwegian and the acceptance of so much diversity. My takeaway from these books was prominently that we as people have the capability and capacity to accept, understand and live in harmony despite being so different. Do we do it? Well, not always. Magnus Chase finds himself facing people, Gods and situations he knew nothing about. His loss is one so deep, its part of him and yet he uses it to save everything and everyone. We run into two brilliant demigods from Camp Half blood but the balance of their story is seamless, there is no overpowering of one on the other. This series mainly deals with loss, because almost every character has

The Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan

This series begins after The Heroes of Olympus ends. The heartbreak I felt when I read this was unreal. We meet all of our favourite demigods and we lose some too. The incredible sense of loss I felt after I read the book was so deep, I couldn't think straight for quite a few days. The trials of Apollo focus on the fall and eventual rise of the God Apollo who was blamed by Zeus for the rise of Gaia. He now has to find all the Oracles he is responsible for and fight his greatest enemy, Python to make things right. We meet a new demigod Meg, who is sassy, smart and so tortured, it makes you want to hug the child and make everything alright for her. These books bring out a whole new list of Gods and Goddesses and more importantly, some ruthless Roman Emperors who decided not to die. We follow Apollo and see him finally understand the pain, the sacrifice and the bravery that heroes possess when they undertake quests for the Gods, or even just have to survive day to day. We

Given that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is currently on @disneyplus (thank the Gods they decided to make a show!), I thought I would review Uncle Rick's work on my page. The next few posts are dedicated to our heroes! This series is on an entirely different level, but in a nice way. When you read the first book in the series, The Lost Hero, believe me, because I did the same, you will stop reading. There's no Percy's POV. It's some random kids and a new satyr and you're bound to wonder, what this is and to shut the book close. BUT, Uncle Rick has an incredible surprise in store for us and we do return to Camp Half blood to find newer Gods and Goddesses and their demigod children. The incredible way in which Rick Riordan has blended the Greek and Roman worlds, the challenges, the secrets that can destroy demigods and Gods, the incredible valour, strength and sacrifice that every hero possesses and the friendship forged through trials is incomparable. I accidentally stumbled across this series in 2010. I used to borrow books from a small bookshop near my university and the sales person suggested I read this new book that has been published. The book she gave me was Percy Jackson and the last Olympian. At the time, I just got excited reading the synopsis and I obviously didn't know it was a series. 2 chapters in I figured out that oopsie, I have no idea who these people are. And so, off I went to the same store the next day and got the remaining books by Rick Riordan. One week. That's all it took to finish this series. All 5 books! I was always fascinated by Greek, Roman and Egyptian mythology. It just made me want to explore more, read more about the gods, goddesses and the lives of heroes and anti heroes too! Then comes along this incredible author who merges the modern with the ancient and gives life to all these Gods and Goddesses we'd heard about. At its core, Percy Jackson is the story of one incredible

Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling

This has to be the first entry on my bookstagram page. I have never been able to fully explain to anyone what it is about Harry Potter and why I still read it, cherish it and love it even 20 years after having read it for the first time. Maybe it's the fact that I read the Philosophers Stone when I was being bullied in school and I had practically no friends and no support. Therefore, reading about the boy who lived under the stairs who had hope and was rescued and admired and found inseparable friends, sparked a fire in my heart. The entire series taught me so much about bravery, loyalty, friendship, family, choices and facing life. It still feels like a warm hug, like a friend speaking to me from far and telling me everything will be alright. I have gone on to read sooooooo many more books (hoarding many too) but I always, always read the Harry Potter series every quarter. No book is perfect and neither is this series but read it for an escape. To enter the world of m
